Manchester United have taken a big step forward in their pursuit of Geovany Quenda, with sources confirming he is keen on a move.
The highly-rated Sporting Lisbon wing-back is eager to link up again with Ruben Amorim.
United are undergoing major internal restructuring, with the club’s new ownership aiming to cut costs while improving squad depth.
Despite financial caution, the recruitment strategy remains focused on signing young talents with long-term potential—a vision reflected in the January arrivals of Ayden Heaven (£1.5m from Arsenal) and Patrick Dorgu (£25.3m from Lecce).
TEAMtalk understands that United are keen on securing Quenda this summer, and while reports have suggested a deal is already close, sources indicate it is not yet finalized.
However, there is growing confidence within Old Trafford that the 17-year-old will join at the end of the season.

Amorim Key to Quenda’s Interest in United Move

A key factor in Quenda’s willingness to sign for United is his strong relationship with Amorim. The Portuguese coach gave Quenda his first-team debut at Sporting and remains a big admirer of his talent.
Quenda is represented by super-agent Jorge Mendes, and his Gestifute agency is already in talks with United over a potential summer move. While Sporting have an £83 million release clause in his contract, it is believed a deal could be done for significantly less.

How Quenda and Dorgu Fit Together at United

With Dorgu already at the club, there had been some uncertainty over whether United would push for Quenda. However, it is confirmed that United want both players, as their versatility allows them to operate on either flank.
  • Quenda, despite being a right-back/right wing-back, has played on the left wing and in attacking midfield this season, showcasing his adaptability.
  • Dorgu, primarily right-sided, is expected to be moved to the left permanently, a position where he is most comfortable.
At just 17, Quenda will likely need time to adjust before becoming a first-team regular, but his arrival would bolster United’s long-term squad depth.

United’s Left-Sided Options in Flux

United’s left-back situation remains uncertain.
  • PSV Eindhoven have an option to make Tyrell Malacia’s loan move permanent at the end of the season and are keen to trigger that clause.
  • Luke Shaw’s future at United is not guaranteed, as Amorim wants a more consistent left-sided option who can stay fit and perform consistently. If Shaw remains, he may have to accept a backup role next season.

Shock Interest in Joao Cancelo

Amid uncertainty at left-back, United have been linked with a surprise move for Joao Cancelo.
The former Manchester City full-back enjoyed great success under Pep Guardiola, winning: 3 Premier League titles, 1 FA Cup, 1 EFL Cup
However, after falling out with Guardiola, he was loaned to Bayern Munich and Barcelona before joining Al Hilal in the Saudi Pro League. Reports suggest United could explore bringing him back to the Premier League.

Why Arsenal Didn’t Move for Rashford

Meanwhile, it has emerged that Arsenal did not attempt to sign Marcus Rashford in January, despite speculation. Instead, Aston Villa secured the England international on loan with an option to buy for £40 million at the end of the season.
With major squad changes on the horizon, United’s summer plans are beginning to take shape, with Quenda, Dorgu, and potentially Cancelo among the names linked with reinforcing Amorim’s squad.
