Atalanta’s in-form striker Mateo Retegui has emerged as a top target for Premier League giants Arsenal and
Manchester United, with both clubs already initiating contact over a potential summer move, according to reports.
The 25-year-old Italian international has been in sensational form this season, scoring 20 goals in just 22 Serie A appearances, despite only starting 18 matches.
Rapid Rise to Stardom
Retegui joined Atalanta from Genoa last summer after scoring seven league goals in his debut Serie A campaign. However, his impact has exceeded all expectations, making him one of the most prolific strikers in Italy.
Born and raised in Argentina, Retegui first made a name for himself at Tigre, where he scored 30 goals in 48 appearances while on loan from Boca Juniors.
His performances earned him a move to Serie A, where he has quickly established himself as one of Europe’s most sought-after strikers.
Premier League and European Interest Grows
According to Foot Mercato, both Arsenal and
Manchester United have already contacted Atalanta’s management to explore the possibility of a summer transfer.
However, they are not alone. Aston Villa and Paris Saint-Germain have also expressed interest in the red-hot forward, adding further competition for his signature.
Atalanta in Strong Position to Demand a High Fee
Retegui is under contract with Atalanta until 2028, meaning the Bergamo-based club is under no pressure to sell. Given his current form, Atalanta would demand a significant fee for their star striker.
The club originally paid €28 million (£23.3m) to Genoa last summer, but his price tag has skyrocketed.
His value only increased further last weekend, when Retegui netted four goals in Atalanta’s 5-0 thrashing of Verona.
Gasperini: Retegui Needs to Perform in Tougher Matches
Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini praised Retegui’s goal-scoring prowess but also challenged him to improve when the team is under pressure.
"He’s extraordinary when the team dominates, like today," Gasperini said."An incredible finisher—20 goals so far is an outstanding number. But there are also games where he doesn’t dominate, when we have to defend, and there’s room for improvement."
Retegui’s Champions League Impact
Retegui will look to continue his goal-scoring exploits when Atalanta face Club Brugge in the Champions League knockout play-off on Wednesday night. He already scored three goals in the group stage, and another standout performance could further increase his value.
With Manchester United, Arsenal, Aston Villa, and PSG all circling, Retegui’s future is set to be one of the hottest topics of the summer transfer window.
