Manchester United have shifted their focus to RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko as their top striker target, moving ahead of Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins.
The Red Devils, under manager Ruben Amorim, are prioritizing the 22-year-old Slovenian over the 29-year-old Watkins due to Sesko’s youth, potential, and reported preference for a move to Old Trafford.
United have made contact with Sesko’s representatives to discuss terms and are in talks with Leipzig, who are open to a transfer for around £60m to £78m, potentially including add-ons, due to a gentleman’s agreement with the player.
The club’s interest in Sesko, who scored 21 goals in 45 appearances for Leipzig in the 2024/25 season, stems from his all-round attributes, including speed, versatility, and ability to score from various positions.
United’s director of recruitment, Christopher Vivell, who previously worked with Sesko at Leipzig and Red Bull Salzburg, is a key figure in pushing the deal, giving United an edge over competitors like Newcastle, who are also keen but reportedly less favored by Sesko.
Watkins, despite his Premier League pedigree with 16 goals and 14 assists in 54 appearances for Villa last season, is now a secondary option, reported Manchester Evening News.
Villa’s £60m valuation is deemed too high for a player with limited resale value due to his age, and United believe a deal could be struck for £40m to £45m, though Villa remain firm on keeping him.
United’s pursuit is complicated by financial constraints, requiring player sales (e.g., Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, or Antony) to fund the move.
Sesko’s past decision to reject United in 2021 for Leipzig, citing a better developmental fit, suggests negotiations must align with his career goals.
With the transfer window closing on September 1, 2025, United are under pressure to act swiftly, especially with Newcastle advancing their own talks for Sesko.
