Manchester United still want a new out-and-out striker to lead the attack and
Ollie Watkins has emerged as favourite in a two-man short list.
The Red Devils have identified Aston Villa’s Watkins and RB Leipzig’s
Benjamin Sesko as primary targets, with talks ongoing to secure a marquee signing, according to reports.
Watkins, 29, has emerged as a top choice due to his proven Premier League pedigree.
The England international scored 16 Premier League goals last season and contributed 14 assists in 54 appearances across all competitions for Villa.
Despite his contract running until 2028, United have made fresh contact with Villa, who value their star striker at around £60m.
However, Villa have communicated that Watkins is not for sale, a stance United hope may soften as the deadline approaches.
Watkins’ experience and goal-scoring ability align with Amorim’s preference for a player who can immediately impact the starting XI, reported
The Sun.
Alternatively, United are exploring a move for Sesko, a 22-year-old Slovenian forward with a £70m price tag.
Sesko’s 21 goals in 45 appearances for Leipzig last season have drawn interest from Newcastle as well, but United’s head of recruitment, Christopher Vivell, who previously worked with Sesko at Leipzig, is pushing for the deal.
While Sesko’s youth and potential offer long-term value, concerns linger about his adaptation to the Premier League, given past struggles of Bundesliga imports like Timo Werner.
The pursuit of a new striker comes amid doubts over Rasmus Hojlund’s future, with the young Dane struggling badly last season. United’s recent £133.5m signings of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo have added firepower, but Amorim seeks a dedicated centre-forward to lead the line.
The club has also been linked with PSG’s Gianluigi Donnarumma, whose contract situation has put United on alert, though no concrete moves have materialized.
With the Premier League season looming, United face a race against time to finalize their striker signing. Whether they opt for Watkins’ proven quality or Sesko’s high potential remains a key decision for Amorim and director of football Jason Wilcox.
