Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins is seen by
Ruben Amorim as a key addition for Manchester United and he has the backing of Roy Keane.
Watkins, 29, has an impressive record of 87 goals and 42 assists in 223 appearances for Villa since his £33 million transfer from Brentford in 2020.
However, his frustration at Villa, where he was displaced by Manchester United loanee
Marcus Rashford in key matches like the Champions League quarter-final against Paris Saint-Germain, has fueled speculation about a move to Old Trafford.
Watkins is reportedly open to new challenges, making him a prime target for United.
Preliminary talks with Villa have begun, with the Birmingham club setting a £60 million price tag. United, cautious about Watkins’ age and resale value as he nears 30 in December, are reluctant to meet this valuation.
The absence of European football, following United’s 1-0 Europa League final loss to Tottenham, complicates their pitch to Watkins.
However, former United captain Keane has strongly endorsed the striker’s potential fit, reported the
Manchester Evening News.
Speaking during Sky Sports coverage in the 2023/24 season, Keane praised Watkins’ “sharpness and movement,” describing his Premier League form as “amazing” and asserting, “He’s shown he can play for a top club like Manchester United.
"His goals and assists are top-class, and he’s in great form.”
The transfer’s likelihood may depend on Rasmus Hojlund’s future, with Inter Milan circling the Danish striker.
Should Hojlund leave, Watkins could seamlessly replace him, bringing proven Premier League quality. Villa’s interest in Porto’s Evanilson Aghehowa might soften their stance on Watkins’ departure, providing United an opportunity.
Under Amorim and technical director Jason Wilcox, United are prioritizing sustainable signings, but Watkins’ experience and goal-scoring prowess align with their ambitions.
As pre-season approaches, with United facing Leeds in Sweden on July 19, Watkins’ potential move signals their intent to rebuild a competitive frontline capable of challenging for major honors.
