Rio Ferdinand gives prediction for next season and it's not what fans will want to hear

Rio Ferdinand believes that Manchester United will again miss out on the Champions League spots next season.

"I'm going eighth. Seventh or eighth," he said, before adding: "Revisit this if we get one or two more signings and I might change my answer."

Previously he had been more optimistic about United’s prospects for the 2025/26 season but he has always emphasized the crucial role of summer transfer activity.

In a previous interview he said: “I’m cautiously optimistic that United can finish in the top six next season — but it really depends on whether the owners, Ineos, back Ruben Amorim with the right signings.”

United’s disappointing 2024/25 campaign, where they finished 15th and missed out on European football, means significant squad upgrades are necessary.

Ferdinand highlighted this, stating: “You can’t expect results on the pitch without bringing in quality players. The squad definitely needs strengthening, especially after the tough season we’ve just seen.”

He explained that success won’t come easily: “It’s about building a team that can compete week in, week out against the best in the league. That requires focus, a clear strategy, and decisive action in the transfer market.”

Ferdinand identified key areas for improvement, particularly a new striker and defensive reinforcements:

“Ruben needs firepower up front and solidity at the back if United are to push for a top-six finish and beyond,” he said.

Reflecting on fan expectations, he was candid: “There’s no sugar-coating it — last season was below par, and supporters understandably want to see progress. This summer’s window is crucial to give Ruben the tools to deliver.”

Despite the challenges, Ferdinand believes the club’s ownership and management can turn things around if they commit to investing wisely.

He said: “If Ineos and the club push forward with strong signings, there’s every chance United can bounce back. But without those additions, it’ll be a long and difficult season.”
