Manchester United have added João Palhinha to their midfield shortlist as the club continues its summer rebuild under
Rúben Amorim.
The 28-year-old Portuguese international, currently at Bayern Munich, is reportedly available for around €25 million (£21.3 million).
Bayern are open to selling the combative midfielder after just one season, with Palhinha struggling for consistent minutes under Thomas Tuchel and his successor, Vincent Kompany.
United view Palhinha as a cost-effective, high-impact option who could bring much-needed steel and experience to their midfield, especially with Casemiro expected to depart.
“He’s a monster defensively — and a quiet leader,” one Bundesliga analyst told Sky Germany. “Palhinha was just never given the right role at Bayern.”
Palhinha joined Bayern from Fulham last summer in a €58 million deal, but has made only 16 Bundesliga starts.
His numbers, however, remain impressive: he ranks among Europe’s top players for tackles, interceptions, and aerial duels won, highlighting his ability to anchor a midfield — especially in a system like Amorim’s, which demands discipline and intensity from its defensive midfielders.
The player is also understood to be keen on a move back to the Premier League, having thrived at Fulham between 2022 and 2024, where he was consistently one of the division’s top ball-winners.
“I want to play where I’m important, where I’m trusted,” Palhinha reportedly told close associates, as quoted by Bavarian Football Works.
Palhinha already has a strong relationship with Bruno Fernandes, his Portugal teammate, and Amorim is said to be a long-time admirer of the midfielder’s tactical intelligence and physicality.
At just €25 million, United see Palhinha as a potential bargain — especially compared to other targets like Benfica’s João Neves, whose price tag exceeds €100 million.
If United can complete a deal swiftly, Palhinha could join Matheus Cunha as part of the first wave of a more pragmatic and physically robust new-look side under Amorim.
