Viktor Gyokeres has turned down a £55 million transfer approach from Manchester United, as well as similar interest from Arsenal and Chelsea, in a move that has surprised many across European football.
The Swedish striker, who has just finished a sensational season with Sporting CP—scoring an incredible 54 goals in all competitions—has become one of the most in-demand forwards on the continent.
Despite this, Gyokeres is determined to make his next move only under the right circumstances.
Manchester United, seeking a proven number nine to spearhead their attack under new manager Ruben Amorim, made Gyokeres their top striker target after missing out on other options.
United’s initial bid of £55 million was swiftly rejected by both Sporting and the player’s representatives. Arsenal and Chelsea also made inquiries, but Gyokeres has made it clear that he is not interested in making a move simply for the sake of a Premier League switch.
Sporting CP remain adamant that any deal for their star forward must meet his €100 million (£84 million) release clause.
The Portuguese club are not willing to negotiate a lower fee, especially after Gyokeres’ record-breaking season.
In addition to the English clubs, Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal offered Gyokeres a highly lucrative contract, but the striker also rejected that proposal, underlining his desire to compete at the highest level in Europe rather than chasing a big payday.
Sources close to Gyokeres suggest that while he is open to a move to the Premier League, he wants to join a club with a clear project and ambition—one that matches both his personal goals and Sporting’s valuation.
He is said to be particularly interested in reuniting with Ruben Amorim at Manchester United, but only if the club can meet Sporting’s financial demands and present a compelling vision for the future.
With Arsenal now turning their attention to other striker targets and Al Hilal out of the race, Manchester United could still return with an improved offer. For now, however, Gyokeres is content to wait for the right opportunity, making it clear that he will not be rushed into a decision that doesn’t align with his career ambitions.
