Manchester United are keen on a player dubbed 'the new
Casemiro' who is a key figure in the Wolves midfield.
It had appeared a perfect opportunity for United's recruitment to watch Joao Gomes at close quarters in Monday night's game at Molineux but he will be missing through suspension.
Gomes has featured in every single Premier League game so far this season for Wolves but after picking up a fifth yellow card he now will have to miss a game.
The 23-year-old Brazilian has emerged as a key target for United as they pivoted towards cheaper midfielders such as Tyler Adams, Gomes and Conor Gallagher after learning Elliot Anderson and
Adam Wharton are off limits in January.
Gomes is being viewed as a long-term replacement for Casemiro as Ruben Amorim looks to strengthen his midfield options with a more dynamic figure.
United are understood to have Gomes high up their list of targets with the player estimated to cost around £41million with Fabrizio Romano saying the club is "considering" a move.
There's even been speculation that Utd have the £41m 'on the table' for Gomes following what was described as a 'secret meeting' with his agent.
Wolves reportedly value their key midfield asset at around £50m, though their perilous financial position near the bottom of the Premier League could force their hand.
Wolves teammate Matheus Cunha has been full of praise for Gomes's character, saying: "He is a bit older now but I put Casemiro's name there only to show where Joao Gomes could arrive.
"I think Joao has the possibility to arrive. He is very humble, and he works a lot. The good teams come like a gift when you do that."
Gomes has impressed at Molineux with his all-action displays, combining defensive discipline with technical ability that would suit Amorim's preferred high-tempo pressing style.
The Brazilian's versatility to play in multiple midfield roles also appeals to United, who are looking for players who can adapt to different formations.
Despite the interest, United are still keeping an open mind on Gomes, but need convincing he will sufficiently upgrade them. The club's deliberations come as they weigh up their options in the transfer market, with Gomes representing a potentially cost-effective solution to their midfield conundrum.
