Manchester United legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is the most famous super sub and he always worked out in his head when he would come on.
Solskjaer had an illustrious career under Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford during one of its most successful periods and he was willing to accept the role as a substitute.
At the end of the 90s, Fergie had four top-class forwards in Solskjaer, Andy Cole, Dwight Yorke and Teddy Sheringham which kept them fresh for all competitions and helped them to win the famous 1999 treble.
And Solskjaer has revealed his thought process about his role on the bench where he played his valuable part in winning games.
"I signed a long term contract, so what I did was I put my career in his hands really. And I more or less said to myself, 'just do your best'," he told BBC Sport.
"I've seen so many strikers sulking on the bench and I felt, okay, so they've played 70, 80 minutes the defenders, they're tired. I come on, I can make a difference, I'm fresh. As long as my head is fresh and my mentality is good."
He continued: "If we were winning 1-0, I was never going to come on, so I never hoped. If we were 0-0 I was like, 'don't score, don't score until he puts me on'.
"1-0 down, yeah, definitely I'm coming on. 2-0 up, yeah, he'll always give me the 15, 20 minutes just to make me feel part of it. So he was very good at giving me enough minutes. But I knew at 1-0, just sit down, you're not going to come on."
Then looking back at the Champions League final against Bayern he was looking at the clock waiting for his moment on the bench, knowing he was going to come on.
"So 1-0 down against Bayern, I was like, come on then, it's like 20 minutes. Like 88 minutes I think I came on. Yeah, it's one of the best 15 minutes of my football career," he said.
It was in injury time that Solskjaer prodded home from a corner to equalise against Bayern, and United weren't finished with Sheringham getting the winner moments later.
