Manchester United have been told Crystal Palace are under "no pressure" to sell
Adam Wharton after he has been linked with a move.
Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish also said it is "no surprise" that
United are interested in the player and it is though they would need to stump up £60million for him.
The 20-year-old midfielder has been one of the breakout stars of the Premier League since joining Palace from Blackburn Rovers, and his composed displays have not gone unnoticed at Old Trafford.
United scouts have been tracking Wharton’s progress as the club continues to identify young, British talent to refresh the midfield under Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s football structure.
However, Parish has moved quickly to cool speculation that a deal could be on the cards anytime soon.
Speaking on
talkSPORT, the Palace chairman insisted the club have no intention of parting ways with their rising star and are under “no pressure” to sell.
“I think Adam at some point will want to play either in the Champions League with us — if we can make that happen — or probably with another club,” Parish said.
“He’s an extraordinary talent. I think right now, and I can’t speak for Adam, but I think he’s focused on his time at Crystal Palace.”
Parish admitted that interest from a club the size of Manchester United is unsurprising, but he was firm about the midfielder’s current situation.
“If Manchester United want Adam Wharton, that’s nothing surprising really,” he said. “The fact of the matter is he’s got a long contract to run. There’s no pressure on us to do it, and I don’t think there’s any real pressure from the player either.”
Wharton endured some injury setbacks last season, but Parish said the youngster is now fully focused on his development.
“He had a broken season last year with groin problems, but this season he’s completely focused on putting the games in, getting in the England squad, and being a regular for us,” he said.
