Diego Leon may be fighting for his place in the
Manchester United side after a massive move this year but he hasn't forgotten his roots and his family who have helped him get to where he is.
The
20-year-old from Yguazú, Alto Paraná, has used part of his earnings so far to fulfil a lifelong promise: building a new home for his parents.
According to his brother Hernán León, who spoke to Paraguay’s 1080AM, the project began with the complete demolition of their old house.
“The first thing he said to our mother was, ‘Mum, now I have the money, so let’s find a builder to construct our new home,’” Hernán said. “It was a dream he always had for us.”
And as the family home takes shape back in Paraguay, Diego continues to make progress in England. His brother says the young midfielder feels increasingly settled in Manchester, both on and off the pitch.
“He feels very supported,” Hernán added. “They’re good people — they talk to him every day and teach him a lot. He feels the affection not only from the South Americans, but from the whole squad.”
Among those who have taken him under their wing are Lisandro Martínez of Argentina and Manuel Ugarte of Uruguay, with whom Diego has formed a close bond.
Both
players, Hernán said, have offered advice to help him make the most of his opportunity at one of football’s most demanding clubs.
For León, the story is a reminder of how far he has come — from the streets of Yguazú to the training grounds of Carrington.
Yet, even as he chases his Premier League dream, his heart remains firmly at home, building a future not only for himself but for the family who helped him get there.
His brother continued: "He is working very hard, the coach is giving him lots of confidence and telling him that working hard is the route for him to go, that he has a lot of quality and he will have his chance in the team."
