Casemiro's commanding performances this season has led to Manchester United looking at offering him a new deal with a paycut.
The Brazilian had appeared all set to leave at the end of this season after an underwhelming move from Real Madrid which had started with high expectations.
But the 33-year-old has been an integral part of United's improved form this season - and seen again in the game against Spurs last season where the team's level appeared to drop off when he was substituted.
And now Rúben Amorim and co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, are said to be reassessing their long-term wage structure and squad model.
Sources indicate that Casemiro has been told his contract could be extended if he agrees to significantly reduce his salary – aligning with United’s push for financial sustainability and a younger, more dynamic midfield core.
Casemiro’s current earnings make him one of the club’s highest-paid players, a level the management deem inconsistent with the evolving playing and leadership role envisioned for him.
If he opts not to accept the new terms, United are prepared to entertain a summer exit, with interest reportedly coming in from abroad — including the Saudi Pro League.
It is unclear what Casemiro will decide and it appears as though he is currently focusing on the short term and preparing himself for the World Cup with Brazil.
In an interview this week with O Globo he said: "Football is my life, right? So it's inevitable [to continue].
"But I think my wife and family will want some time for themselves, yes. I'm one of those who think that in life you have to have a plan.
"But I'm into short-term goals. Of course, it's inevitable to think about being in good shape for a World Cup, but you can't expect to be in good shape for the World Cup if you're not doing well at Manchester United."
