Manchester United have been given a huge opportunity to sign Inter Milan right-back Denzel Dumfries at a cut-price fee but they need to act quickly.
The Dutch international’s new release clause has been revealed to be just €25 million—but only until mid-July.
According to Fabrizio Romano, this clause must be paid in a single instalment and is attracting interest from both
United and Barcelona, though no formal offers have yet been made.
Dumfries, 29, is coming off another strong season with Inter, making 29 Serie A appearances and helping the club finish as runners-up in Italy.
His physicality, attacking instincts, and experience as a wing-back make him an ideal fit for United manager
Ruben Amorim’s preferred 3-4-3 system, which relies heavily on dynamic wide players.
Amorim has already reinforced the left side with Patrick Dorgu and is looking for further upgrades on the right, where Dumfries’ ability to contribute at both ends of the pitch stands out.
The urgency for United is clear: the €25 million release clause is only valid until mid-July, after which Inter could demand a higher fee or negotiate on different terms, reported the
Express.
Inter’s strategy this summer is to generate funds for new arrivals, and with Dumfries’ contract expiring in June 2025, they are open to a sale if the right offer comes in.
United’s current right-back options include Diogo Dalot and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, but the latter is expected to leave, making a move for Dumfries even more pressing.
Barcelona are also monitoring the situation, but their typical four-defender system may not suit Dumfries as well as Amorim’s wing-back setup at Old Trafford.
For United, the Dutchman’s blend of pace, strength, and attacking output—he contributed eight goals and two assists in 38 games last season—would provide both defensive solidity and an extra dimension going forward.
With the release clause deadline looming and competition from Barcelona, United must act quickly if they want to secure Dumfries, who is seen as a natural upgrade and an ideal fit for Amorim’s tactical vision.
