Bryan Mbeumo wants a move to
Manchester United but would also be happy to stay where he is, says Brentford’s director of football Phil Giles.
Talks between the two clubs have taken place, and while
Mbeumo prefers a switch to United negotiations have been tough.
United appear to have won the battle over Tottenham who have recently appointed his former manager Thomas Frank but a deal still needs to be closed.
Brentford are holding firm on their valuation, seeking in excess of £65 million for the 25-year-old after his outstanding season.
United’s latest offer is understood to be a package rising to £62.5 million, which Brentford have so far declined.
Giles emphasized that while there is “significant interest” in Mbeumo and his preference has been “well publicised,” any transfer must be on terms that are right for Brentford.
“There is significant interest in Bryan. His current preference has been well publicised,” Giles told
Sky Sports News.
“He had an unbelievable season and we expected interest in him. From what I understand, he is also, if needs be, happy to stay at Brentford next year as well.”
Giles clarified that Brentford have already spoken to Mbeumo and his representatives and that it is “not a given” he will depart this summer.
The club is open to a sale if their valuation is met, but there is no guarantee the move will happen unless United return with an improved offer.
“We’ve spoken to Bryan and his representatives. It’s not a given that he’s going to depart this summer. If we get the right offer, there is the potential for a deal to be done but there is only so much we can say now on that.”
The situation remains fluid, with Brentford making it clear they are not under pressure to sell and Mbeumo reportedly willing to stay if a suitable agreement cannot be reached.
United, meanwhile, are expected to consider whether to increase their offer as they look to secure one of their top attacking targets for the new season
