Manchester United have identified Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins as a serious transfer target as they look to strengthen their attack this summer.
The 29-year-old England international has emerged as a leading candidate for
United, especially if Rasmus Hojlund is sold during the current window.
United’s interest comes amid a broader search for a reliable goalscorer after a disappointing season in front of goal, with
Hojlund netting just four Premier League goals.
Discussions between United and Villa have already taken place via intermediaries to explore the possibility of a deal, reported
The Mirror.Watkins, who has consistently delivered double-digit goal returns in five consecutive Premier League seasons, is seen as a proven and adaptable striker.
Last season, he scored 17 goals and provided 14 assists in 54 appearances across all competitions, underlining his ability to both finish and create chances.
His contract at Villa Park runs until 2028, meaning United would need to submit a convincing offer to tempt Villa to sell.
Watkins has previously voiced frustration over a lack of game time in high-profile matches, despite helping Villa secure Champions League qualification.
After being benched for both legs against PSG, Watkins said, “I’m not going to lie – I was fuming I wasn’t playing. I let [Unai Emery] know that. He’s the manager at the end of the day.
"I respect his decision. But I’m not one of the players happy to sit on the bench”.
His ambition and desire for a regular starting role could make a move to Old Trafford attractive.
United’s pursuit of Watkins is part of a wider strategy to add more experience and firepower to their frontline, with other targets including Viktor Gyokeres and Bryan Mbeumo.
However, reports suggest United will only move for Watkins if Hojlund departs, making him a conditional priority.
Watkins’ proven track record, versatility, and Premier League experience make him an appealing option as United look to revamp their attack and return to the top of English football.
