Rasmus Højlund is expected to remain at Manchester United this summer, with the Danish striker reportedly determined to prove himself under new boss Rúben Amorim, despite external interest from clubs including Inter Milan.
The 22-year-old endured a mixed debut season at Old Trafford after his £72 million move from Atalanta last summer.
He finished the 2024/25 campaign with 12 goals across all competitions, showing glimpses of promise but often struggling in a dysfunctional attack during United’s chaotic league campaign.
Reports in Italy had linked Inter Milan with a possible move, initially suggesting interest in a loan or swap deal as United pursue striker reinforcements like Viktor Gyökeres and Hugo Ekitiké.
However, sources close to Højlund suggest the player is not looking to leave and believes he can thrive under a new tactical system, reported ESPN.
“He believes in the project, and he’s ready to compete,” said one insider to Danish outlet Tipsbladet. “He feels he still has much to prove.”
Manager Rúben Amorim has made it clear that every player must fight for their place in the squad, and Højlund’s work ethic and physical profile are seen as valuable tools in Amorim’s high-pressing 3-4-3 system.
While United continue to chase other forwards, including Matheus Cunha — already signed — Højlund is likely to stay as part of a rotating striker unit, rather than be sold.
“Rasmus brings verticality and aggression — but he needs time and structure,” said former United striker Louis Saha. “Let him develop with guidance.”
The expectation is that Højlund will be given the chance to prove himself during pre-season, especially during the club’s U.S. tour.
His future minutes may be influenced by the success or failure of deals for Gyökeres and Ekitiké — but Amorim reportedly sees Højlund as a player worth developing, not discarding.
After a turbulent first season, United’s No. 11 is preparing for a reset — not a goodbye.
