Manchester United have received a significant boost in their pursuit of Sporting striker
Viktor Gyokeres, with reports suggesting it is “only a matter of time” before the prolific Swedish forward leaves Portugal.
United are pushing hard to beat rivals such as Arsenal, Juventus, and Paris Saint-Germain to Gyokeres’ signature, though the deal’s final cost could soar past €100 million.
Gyokeres is determined to leave Sporting this summer, aiming to take the next step in his career by joining a European giant, it is
reported. The striker has reportedly told Sporting he will never play for the club again after they allegedly reneged on a gentleman’s agreement that would have allowed him to depart for €70 million (£60m).
Following a sensational season where he netted 54 goals in 52 appearances, Sporting have raised their asking price to €80 million (£68.5m), insisting they will not let him go for less.
Despite Sporting’s firm stance, clubs interested in Gyokeres believe his public falling out with Sporting president Frederico Varandas could force the club to lower their demands as the summer progresses.
There is a sense that Sporting risk disrupting squad harmony and potentially losing out on a massive transfer fee if they hold out too long
1.
Factoring in Gyokeres’ wage demands over a proposed five-year contract, the total package for the striker could reach €130 million (£111m).
The race for his signature is fierce, with PSG, Barcelona, Liverpool, and Real Madrid all monitoring the situation. However, the main competition currently comes from Manchester United and Arsenal.
TEAMtalk reports that Gyokeres has informed United he is open to joining them this summer, even in the absence of European football—a shift from his earlier preference for Arsenal.
The striker’s strong relationship with United manager Ruben Amorim, established during their time together at Sporting, is believed to be a key factor. Gyokeres trusts Amorim’s vision and believes United can return to the top six and challenge for major honours under his leadership.
Arsenal have already had two bids—£47 million and £51 million—rejected by Sporting. United know that a bid in the region of £55-60 million would open negotiations, potentially giving them the edge to secure Amorim’s top transfer target.
As the transfer window heats up, United are seen as being in pole position, with Amorim reportedly in regular contact with Gyokeres as they aim to make him their new No 9
