Manchester United have received a significant double boost in their pursuit of Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres, as the Swedish forward edges closer to a Premier League move and Liverpool have reportedly withdrawn from the race.
Gyokeres, who scored a staggering 54 goals in 52 appearances during the 2024/25 campaign, has informed Sporting that he wants to leave this summer, believing now is the right time to join one of Europe’s elite clubs.
While there was previously a gentleman’s agreement allowing him to leave for €70 million (£60m), Sporting have angered Gyokeres by raising their demands to at least €80 million (£68m).
Despite earlier suggestions that Liverpool could rival United for the prolific striker, sources close to Anfield have now made it clear that Gyokeres is not part of their transfer plans.
Liverpool are instead focusing on alternative targets, including Newcastle’s Alexander Isak and Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitike, leaving United with a clearer path to sign the Sporting star.
This development is a major boost for new United manager Ruben Amorim, who previously worked with Gyokeres at Sporting and has identified him as his top striker target, it is reported.
Amorim believes Gyokeres is the ideal centre-forward to spearhead his Old Trafford rebuild, with the club already making moves for other key attacking additions such as Matheus Cunha and Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo.
In another positive sign for United, Gyokeres has reportedly told the club he wants to join them this summer, even though they cannot offer Champions League or any European football next season.
The striker is said to be excited by Amorim’s project and sees United as one of the most prestigious clubs in world football, confident they will soon return to competing for trophies and European qualification.
If United succeed in landing Gyokeres, he would complete an attacking overhaul alongside Cunha and Mbeumo, with Rasmus Hojlund expected to leave amid interest from Inter Milan and Napoli. The Gyokeres pursuit demonstrates United’s enduring pulling power and signals their intent to bounce back after a disappointing league campaign
