Manchester United have identified Wilfred Ndidi as a serious summer transfer target, with the Leicester City midfielder available for a cut-price fee following the Foxes’ relegation from the Premier League.
Sources close to the deal suggest United are strongly considering triggering Ndidi’s £9 million release clause, a figure made possible by a clause activated after Leicester’s drop to the Championship.
The Nigerian international, now 28, is seen as a cost-effective way to bolster United’s midfield depth with Premier League-proven experience.
Ndidi made 35 appearances across all competitions last season, chipping in with 5 goals and 3 assists — but it’s his tackling, interception numbers, and defensive positioning that have caught the eye of new boss Rúben Amorim.
With Casemiro expected to leave, United’s holding midfield options are in urgent need of reinforcement.
While Ndidi’s performances have dipped slightly from his peak years, his athleticism, work rate, and positional sense remain strong, reported The Sun.
He would add bite and discipline to a midfield that at times looked overwhelmed last season. Amorim is believed to view Ndidi as a rotational option who could compete with Kobbie Mainoo and potentially partner the youngster in double-pivot systems.
The move also fits with United’s renewed transfer strategy under INEOS — focusing on smart, lower-risk deals rather than splashy headline signings.
At just £9 million, Ndidi offers a low-cost gamble with high upside, particularly if he rediscovers the form that once made him one of the league’s most effective ball-winners.
United are expected to face competition from several Premier League clubs and European sides, but their offer of regular football — and the chance to work under a progressive manager like Amorim — may prove decisive.
Negotiations are ongoing, but if United can move quickly, Ndidi could be the first of several signings in a summer rebuild focused on balance, discipline, and experience.
