Manchester United could be poised to make a move for a keeper at the Club World Cup and loan out Andre Onana.
It will be difficult to sell Onana due to his form and high salary, so the club is thinking that a loan deal is the best option, according to The Sun.
Onana, who joined United from Inter Milan in the summer of 2023, has endured a mixed spell at Old Trafford.
While he has shown few glimpses of his shot-stopping ability and comfort with the ball at his feet that initially attracted the club and his performances have also been marked by costly errors and inconsistency.
These issues have led to growing doubts about his suitability as United’s long-term number one, prompting Amorim to consider alternatives.
Amorim is reported to have personally recommended the club explore a loan deal for Onana, rather than forcing a permanent sale that could be complicated by the player’s contract and salary demands.
This approach would allow United to bring in a new first-choice goalkeeper while retaining some flexibility regarding Onana’s future.
Among the leading candidates to replace him is Aston Villa’s Emi Martinez, who has established himself as one of the Premier League’s top goalkeepers and was instrumental in Argentina’s 2022 World Cup triumph.
Martinez’s experience and leadership qualities make him an attractive option, though any deal would likely require a substantial fee.
Another name on United’s radar is Botafogo’s John Victor, a highly rated Brazilian goalkeeper who impressed during the 2025 Club World Cup.
Victor, aged 29, is reportedly keen on a move to England and could be available for a relatively modest fee of around £6 million.
His potential arrival would add further competition for the starting spot.
Another potential recruit is 25-year-old Portugal international Diogo Costa, who has a £64million release clause in his Porto contract.
Costa seems set to leave his homeland during this window and has 'dreams' of playing in the Premier League.
The willingness to consider a loan for Onana reflects a pragmatic approach from United’s management.
It acknowledges the challenges of finding a buyer willing to meet both the club’s and player’s demands, while also allowing Amorim to reshape his squad according to his tactical vision.
Should Onana depart, even temporarily, it would mark a significant shift in United’s plans after just two seasons, highlighting the club’s determination to address weaknesses and build a more competitive side for the future.
Ultimately, the decision will depend on the availability of suitable replacements and the interest in Onana from other clubs.
However, the club’s openness to a loan move signals a readiness to make tough decisions in pursuit of progress, as they look to restore their status among England’s elite.
