Manchester United have reportedly entered the race to sign Gianluigi Donnarumma, as Paris Saint-Germain consider selling the Italian goalkeeper this summer.
With questions mounting over the consistency of
André Onana, United are exploring options for a fresh start between the posts — and Donnarumma, 26, has emerged as a standout candidate.
PSG are said to be open to selling the Euro 2020 winner for around €40 million (£34 million), which could represent a value opportunity for a world-class shot-stopper still entering his prime.
Donnarumma has made over 300 senior appearances and was named Player of the Tournament at Euro 2020, but he has faced increased scrutiny in Paris after inconsistent form and a growing rift within the squad.
PSG have already lined up alternatives, including Benfica’s Anatoliy Trubin and young talent Arnau Tenas, paving the way for Donnarumma’s potential exit.
“He’s a phenomenal keeper, but not a flawless one,” said one PSG insider, reported
The Sun. “A new environment could reignite his focus and consistency.”
United, meanwhile, endured a shaky season defensively, with Onana making several high-profile errors, particularly in the early stages of the Champions League and Europa League campaigns.
While his shot-stopping improved in the second half of the season, concerns remain over his distribution under pressure and long-term suitability to Rúben Amorim’s evolving system.
“We need players with calm minds and elite standards,” Amorim said recently. “Every position will be evaluated — no exceptions.”
Although Tom Heaton has signed a one-year extension to stay as a veteran backup, United are looking to bring in a first-choice contender — and Donnarumma’s experience, big-game mentality, and commanding presence make him an attractive solution.
The Red Devils may face competition from Chelsea and Juventus, both monitoring the situation closely. However, Donnarumma’s Premier League interest is strong, and United are believed to have already held preliminary discussions with his camp.
If a deal materialises, Donnarumma could become a cornerstone of United’s rebuild — and a definitive answer to their ongoing goalkeeping uncertainty.
