André Onana has urged unity and calm after Manchester United suffered their 18th Premier League defeat of the season, falling 1-0 to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
The result extended United’s winless streak in the league to eight games, a run not seen since the 1989–90 campaign.
Speaking after the match, Onana accepted that United had failed to deliver in key moments but insisted the performance was not without positives.
“We came here to win and unfortunately we didn't make it,” Onana told reporters. “We have to stay together no matter what. I think we had great control, possession, some chances — but we didn’t score. That was the big difference. That’s football sometimes.”
The Cameroonian goalkeeper made several key stops in the first half but was ultimately beaten by Marc Cucurella’s 71st-minute header from a corner — once again highlighting United’s ongoing struggles defending set-pieces.
It was a familiar script, and Onana was visibly frustrated post-match, despite trying to project composure.
His teammates struck a similarly subdued tone. Bruno Fernandes, speaking after receiving his fourth Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award, praised the travelling support and acknowledged the result simply wasn’t good enough.
“We need to be better — that’s clear,” Fernandes said. “I appreciate the fans being with us even on nights like this. We have to give them more.”
Meanwhile, Harry Maguire, who saw a goal disallowed for offside in the first half, also spoke briefly to club media, admitting that small details continue to cost United.
“It’s about moments, and we’re not taking ours. That’s hurting us,” Maguire said.
The defeat has heaped further pressure on manager Rúben Amorim, whose side now must regroup quickly ahead of next week’s Europa League final against Tottenham in Bilbao. The final represents United’s last chance to salvage a dismal campaign — and to secure Champions League football for next season.
Whether the players can rally in time remains to be seen. But as Onana made clear, the focus must now shift:
“We still have one more big game. We have to be ready.”
