Manchester United manager
Rúben Amorim is planning a summer rebuild in defence, following an ongoing injury crisis that has left the club short on fit centre-backs.
According to
The Sun, Amorim is increasingly concerned about the lack of depth and fitness in United’s backline, especially with key players like Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, and Lisandro Martínez all currently sidelined.
The situation has left
United scrambling to patch together makeshift defences in key fixtures — a concern ahead of the Europa League final against Tottenham on May 21.
“We’ve had to be creative with solutions, but this can’t be the norm for next season,” Amorim reportedly said in internal discussions with United’s recruitment team.
The Portuguese coach, known for his tactical discipline and preference for a high defensive line, is believed to have asked for at least one new centre-back this summer.
Amorim is targeting defenders who are comfortable in possession, athletic, and capable of playing in both a back four and a back three.
United’s defensive record has been one of the weakest among the league’s top 10 this season, with set-piece vulnerability and injury-prone starters among the recurring issues.
While Yoro and de Ligt are viewed as long-term solutions, the lack of consistent availability has undermined the team’s stability at the back.
Reports suggest that Sporting CP’s Gonçalo Inácio, a player Amorim previously coached, is one name under consideration.
United have also been linked with Jonathan Tah of Bayer Leverkusen, who is available on a free transfer this summer.
United’s decision to release veteran Jonny Evans and the expected departure of Victor Lindelöf further highlights the need for fresh blood in the defensive ranks. With Financial Fair Play constraints, United are prioritizing value-driven signings who can immediately contribute.
Whether the club can meet Amorim’s demands remains to be seen, but the message from the manager is clear: the defence must be rebuilt to avoid another season of instability and underperformance.
