Manchester United legend Patrice Evra has delivered a scathing assessment of the club’s current state under
Rúben Amorim, warning that relegation would be a real possibility without the leadership and performances of Bruno Fernandes.
Speaking to
Sky Sports, the former left-back didn’t hold back in his analysis of United’s season, calling the team’s results “really, really bad” and highlighting the lack of passion and structure in recent performances.
United currently sit 16th in the Premier League with one game left to play, following a run of poor domestic form despite reaching the Europa League final.
Evra praised Fernandes, United’s captain, as the only player keeping the team above water, both in terms of mentality and output. The Portuguese midfielder has contributed 19 goals and 18 assists across all competitions, and his absence has often coincided with visibly weaker team performances.
“If Bruno Fernandes wasn’t playing, I think we would talk about relegation,” Evra told Sky Sports. “That’s how important he is to Manchester United right now.”
The former defender, who made over 370 appearances for the club and won five Premier League titles, also questioned the impact of Rúben Amorim, suggesting that the manager has not yet demonstrated the tactical authority or leadership needed to turn the team around.
“I’m not seeing a clear philosophy or system,” Evra said. “And when the results are this bad, you have to point the finger at the manager and the players.”
United’s defensive frailties and lack of attacking identity have come under increasing scrutiny, especially following their recent 2-0 defeat to West Ham. Amorim has said he will not resign, but pressure continues to build from both fans and former players.
With a Europa League final against Tottenham on May 21, United have one last chance to salvage something from a nightmare season. But as Evra pointed out, unless serious changes are made, United risk falling even further behind their Premier League rivals.
