Manchester United have placed a £40 million price tag on Marcus Rashford, sparking renewed speculation about the forward’s long-term future at Old Trafford.
The 27-year-old is currently on loan at Aston Villa, where he has shown flashes of his best form following a troubled start to the 2024/25 season.
United are prepared to let Rashford leave permanently this summer — and while Aston Villa do have an option to buy, it does not guarantee them first refusal.
That means any club willing to match United’s valuation could enter the race to sign him.
Rashford has scored four goals and added six assists in 17 appearances for Villa since making the temporary switch in January.
The loan move followed a highly publicized fallout with United boss Rúben Amorim, amid questions over his discipline and role within the squad. But under Unai Emery, Rashford appears to have regained confidence, sharpness, and form.
Despite Villa’s interest, Rashford’s personal ambition may influence the final decision. The forward is understood to be keen on playing Champions League football, something Villa could offer if they secure a top-four finish.
However, should they fall short, Rashford is reportedly open to a move abroad — with Barcelona named as a likely destination.
“He wants to be back in the Champions League and play at the highest level,” a source told The Times. “He’s also aware that this summer could be the right time to reset.”
Barcelona have maintained a long-standing interest in Rashford and, despite financial challenges, are said to be exploring creative ways to bring him to the Camp Nou.
Rashford, for his part, is believed to be open to the move — particularly if it helps him cement a place in England’s Euro 2028 squad.
United’s decision to cash in on their academy graduate reflects broader changes expected at the club this summer.
With Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) in play and a major rebuild looming, Rashford’s sale could free up vital funds for new signings.
