Manchester United’s search for a new goalkeeper is rapidly becoming one of the club’s main objectives with Andre Onana’s future at Old Trafford under serious threat.
After a season marked by inconsistency and high-profile errors, United are reportedly open to selling Onana if they receive an offer of £20 million or more, and the club’s recruitment team is casting a wide net for his replacement.
The most high-profile development is United’s formal offer for Atlético Madrid’s Jan Oblak. The 32-year-old Slovenian, long regarded as one of the world’s top goalkeepers, is now firmly in United’s sights.
Reports from Spain and England confirm that United are prepared to spend around €30 million (£25 million) to secure Oblak’s signature, with Atlético Madrid open to letting him go as they look to reduce their wage bill and refresh their squad.
Oblak, who has kept 15 clean sheets in 42 appearances this season, would bring immediate experience and stability to a position that has been problematic for United since David de Gea’s departure.
While Oblak is under contract until 2028, Atlético are not expected to place obstacles in his way if their valuation is met.
Oblak is not the only name on United’s shortlist. The club remains interested in Porto’s Diogo Costa, whose €75 million release clause makes him a more expensive but longer-term option.
Other targets include Espanyol’s Joan Garcia, Brighton’s Bart Verbruggen and Carl Rushworth, Sunderland’s Anthony Patterson, and Blackburn’s Aynsley Pears, with United considering both established internationals and promising homegrown talents.
There is also reported interest in Lille’s Lucas Chevalier and Royal Antwerp’s Senne Lammens as part of a broader strategy to strengthen the goalkeeping department.
With Onana’s future uncertain and Tom Heaton potentially departing, United could even bring in two new goalkeepers this summer.
The pursuit of Jan Oblak, however, stands out as the marquee move-one that could provide the reliability and leadership United have lacked between the posts in recent seasons.
