Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has issued a rallying cry as the Red Devils gear up for their Europa League semi-final first leg against Athletic Bilbao.
Following a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Bournemouth in the Premier League, where Rasmus Hojlund’s 96th-minute equalizer salvaged a point, Fernandes is determined to shift the team’s focus to European glory.
With United languishing in 14th place in the league, the Europa League represents their best shot at securing Champions League qualification next season.
“We have to put the Bournemouth game to bed now and think about Bilbao,” Fernandes declared, emphasizing the importance of the upcoming match.
“The Europa League is a massive competition for us, and we need to be fully focused.”
His words underscore the urgency for United to prioritize the European stage, especially as they face a Bilbao side buoyed by the prospect of reaching the final at their home stadium, San Mamés.
Fernandes also highlighted the need to better support United’s attacking players, particularly young striker Rasmus Hojlund.
“Rasmus is a goalscorer, but he needs the right service,” he said. “We have to create better chances for him and our other forwards to make the difference.”
His comments reflect a call for improved creativity and precision in the final third, an area where United have struggled this season.
Manager Ruben Amorim, meanwhile, is navigating a tight schedule and injury concerns. The return of Luke Shaw after 14 months is a boost, but Amad Diallo’s limited minutes and injuries to Matthijs de Ligt and Toby Collyer complicate preparations.
With only 65 hours between the Bilbao clash and a subsequent Premier League match against Brentford, Amorim is likely to field a weakened side in the latter to keep his key players fresh for the Europa League second leg on May 8.
As Manchester United prepare to face a formidable Bilbao, Fernandes’ leadership and focus will be crucial. His determination to rally the squad could prove the difference in their quest for European success.
