Bruno Fernandes recently sent a heartfelt message to his former Manchester United teammate Juan Mata.
The message was shared on Instagram to mark Mata's 37th birthday on a Monday. Accompanying a picture of the two players, Fernandes' caption read: "Happy birthday brother, I miss you".
Juan Mata, who currently plays for Western Sydney Wanderers in the Australian A-League, had an eight-year spell at Manchester United after joining from Chelsea in January 2014.
During his time at Old Trafford, he made 285 appearances, scoring 51 goals and providing 44 assists. Mata was part of the squad that won the Europa League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup, and Community Shield, adding to the club's trophy cabinet.
He became a fan favourite due to his humility and creativity, and is considered one of the "better signings post-Sir Alex Ferguson".
Despite only playing together in 29 matches, Fernandes and Mata developed a tight bond that has remained strong since Mata's departure.
Fernandes has spoken about this close friendship, revealing in an interview with Optus Sport that he still talks with Mata to seek advice on improving aspects of his game. Fernandes values learning from someone who has achieved great things in football.
Mata is reportedly very happy in Australia. He has shared many positive details about his experience there, including videos showcasing his lifestyle, such as playing golf, being on the beach, the stadium, the fans, and the conditions at his club.
Fernandes contrasted this with the cold Manchester weather he experienced while Mata was enjoying sun and beach life. Mata has told Fernandes that he is "in love with the country and the culture".
Mata's positive reports and lifestyle videos have even led Fernandes to consider the possibility of playing in Australia himself one day. Fernandes noted that having Mata still living there would make the option "even better".
