Rasmus Hojlund appeared to aim a dig at
Manchester United with a message as he held a trophy at Napoli which was liked by several ex-teammates.
The Danish striker joined Napoli in the summer after failing to make an impact last season in
Ruben Amorim's side.
And returning to the league where he burst onto the scene as one of Europe’s most promising talents with Atalanta in 2022/23, he has again found himself among the goals.
United splashed an initial £64m on him in 2023, but the 22-year-old was shipped out on loan at the beginning of this campaign.
His fortunes have changed at Napoli and he capped off an encouraging first half of the season at the club with a first piece of silverware on Monday night, lifting the Supercoppa Italiana after David Neres’ brace saw Napoli dispatch Bologna 2-0 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Hojlund, who played the full 90 minutes in the final, took to Instagram to post a picture of him smiling with the trophy, accompanied by a six-word verdict of his decision to move away from Man United.
He wrote: “What a great decision looks like,” which was also liked by Lisandro Martinez, Diego Leon and Chido Obi-Martins.
Hojlund had 26 goals and six assists from 95 appearances for United where his confidence had clearly ebbed by the time he left.
But his comment clearly showed his self-belief has returned. He could move to Napoli permanently at the end of the season, with United accepting a package that included a €6m loan fee and a €44m clause to by the striker.
Scott McTominay is another player who left Old Trafford and had gone on to better things at Napoli as he was named the Serie A Player of the Year last season.
Comparisons are now being made between Hojlund and Benjamin Sesko who appears to be going through a similar experience this season where his confidence dropped before he was injured.
Back in the team a lot will depend on Sesko in the coming games with Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo away at the African Cup of Nations.
