Peter Schmeichel claims that the
Manchester United players "don't understand" the system which
Ruben Amorim is playing after their defeat to Aston Villa.
Defensive mistakes cost United dearly as they went down
2-1 to Villa and it was a difficult night in particular for Lenny Yoro who struggled against the movement and pace of Morgan Rogers.
In the first goal he never got close to Rogers and then appeared scared to put in a tackle for the second.
"I don't think they completely understand what their roles are in this system. So conceding one goal in that manner, well, you'd think you'd never concede again, but you do," said Schmeichel.
"So it's a lot of things focusing on the job, concentration, and then for some players, I don't want to be too negative because some of them are really, really young and need to learn.
"Also the defensive instincts, you know, the ball can come back to that area where they were. You saw Yoro there just waiting before realising 'oh, it's coming back', so you had to react instead of anticipate."
And Schmeichel returned to the system repeating what many critics have said, that the way Amorim has set the team out doesn't bring out the best in the players he has.
"It's a lot of things, but I think deep, deep down, you know, first of all, the system doesn't fit the players that Ruben Amarin has. The back four is not protected by a really good solid midfield, and then it's your understanding," said the United great.
Referring to the injury to Bruno Fernandes he also is worried due to his influence on the team.
"It is a massive problem, he is the leader of the team, he's the captain of the team," said Schmeichel.
"We don't see the best of him because he plays in a position which is not his prime position, he is a better number 10 but the system doesn't really have that position for him. They need him back there, he is one who can help all the players around him."
