Paul Scholes has told why he "loved" Andy Cole's arrival at Manchester United for a surprise reason during training.
Cole had set the Premier League alight with his goals for Newcastle and it led to a high-profile move to United in 1995 for £6 million plus Keith Gillespie going the other way.
And while he went on to shine at United, he was never a keen trainer as was pointed out by Scholes who began by telling he Cole he "never did a preseason" as he was always taking it easy.
And Cole laughing replied: "I tried my best to do a preseason."
Scholes said he was used to being last during the runs in training but then with the arrival of Cole, he didn't look so bad.
"I loved him coming on, to be honest. I was the worst runner. I was always at the back, and then Coley came," said Scholes.
"I was like, 'thank God!' He didn't give a f***. The difference between us was I was trying my best and last, but he came ... he was brilliant, I loved him.
"He was always ready for games, don't get me wrong, but when it came to training, you weren't that a****. were you."
And Cole admitted: "No, training for me was just about ticking over."
Alex Ferguson would demand his players tried their best in training but as Cole was naturally fit, there was not an issue - and the manager knew to treat characters differently.
And Scholes continued on The Good, The Bad and The Football: "I think he did want people to train properly but different characters... we might train as hard as we can, we're tackling, kicking s***.
"Coley would just be like every now and again he might do a brilliant shot and score a goal. Everyone is different but he was always ready for a game."
Nicky Butt pointed out: "Coley as well was like fit, ripped, physically ready. You get some players that are a bit overweight and don't train well and that's when the manager would nail them down but he could never question him."
And Butt added: "You get some players that were, you know, basically not cared about the fitness, didn't care about the body fat, not care about the weights in the gym. Coley wasn't like that he was just laid back, but then at the finishing in the last 20 minutes, he'd come alive."
