Manchester United are reportedly set to sign Lille duo Jonathan David and Angel Gomes on free
transfers in the summer, providing a significant boost to head coach
Ruben Amorim. This news comes as the Red Devils are attempting to strengthen their squad for the forthcoming season without making a substantial financial outlay.
United, presently positioned 15th in the Premier League after 26 matches, are closer to the relegation zone in points than they are to the top four. Performances have deteriorated under Amorim's guidance, with the team winning only four of their 15 Premier League games in his charge.
Amorim, a former Sporting CP boss, successfully signed Patrick Dorgu from Lecce during the January transfer market. And now United are reportedly turning their focus towards two Lille players who are out of contract this summer: Jonathan David and Angel Gomes, according to Spanish publication Fichajes.
Gomes: A Youth Academy Graduate
Gomes, a product of
Man Utd's youth academy, will be available on a free transfer. Amorim believes Gomes' versatility and creativity in the midfield make him a valuable asset to bolster the team's attacking prowess.
Signing the Lille duo would add quality to the team without necessitating extra spending on transfers. This seems to align with the board's plans, and efforts are underway to persuade both players to join Manchester United and ensure their Premier League arrival.
Amorim, grappling with the team's recent inadequate performances, insists that more energy and quality will make the difference. As they were forced to come back from being 2-0 down at half time against Everton this past Saturday, the coach's battle for performance improvement is clearly ongoing.
David's Performance and Form
David is a prolific striker, known for his impressive 26-goals for Lille in the last season and 20 in the ongoing one, looks set to be available on a free transfer this summer.
David just celebrated his 25th birthday and is hinting at a move to a 'bigger club'. Unable to agree on a new contract with Lille, he has now become a free agent. David's status has piqued the interest of Europe's top clubs, including Man Utd, Inter Milan, and Juventus.
In a recent interview with French outlet Onze Mondial, David shared, "Yes, I will be free at the end of the season. And as for my future, I hope to grow, to become a better player, and to play for the biggest clubs in the world, if I can."
Despite playing in Ligue 1, arguably the weakest division of Europe's top five leagues, David's performance continued undeterred in the Champions League matches against Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Juventus, Liverpool, and Feyenoord.
United should take advantage of this opportunity, despite the small downside of David's lack of Premier League experience.
It is also known that free agents command huge wages, yet these potential challenges should not deter Manchester United as a potential lucrative contract with David could still mean that signing another striker would be possible.
How often does such talent become available for free? United should seize this rare opportunity.
