Manchester United’s new INEOS leadership is making a clear break from the club’s storied past, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his team reportedly growing "sick" of constant references to the glory years.
Sir Dave Brailsford, INEOS’ director of sport, has made it a personal mission to avoid mentioning the club’s era of dominance under Sir Alex Ferguson.
According to The Mirror, INEOS, which invested over £1 billion for a 27.7% stake in United, is determined to move forward without being burdened by past successes.
Brailsford believes that nostalgia for previous triumphs is preventing the club from evolving and reclaiming its place at the top.
In a bold and controversial shift, some senior figures at Old Trafford now attribute United’s 12-year decline to Ferguson himself.
They argue that his ongoing influence after retiring in 2013 has hindered the club’s ability to modernize its coaching and scouting structures. This criticism comes despite Ferguson’s unparalleled achievements, including 13 Premier League titles, five FA Cups, and two Champions League trophies.
INEOS' stance has already led to significant changes, most notably the termination of Ferguson’s multi-million-pound ambassador contract in October as part of widespread cost-cutting efforts. The club, facing substantial financial losses, is set for another wave of redundancies, with up to 200 staff members expected to be let go.
Employees have been called to a meeting at Old Trafford on Monday, where the latest round of job cuts will be officially announced. This follows a similar restructuring just seven months ago, which saw 250 staff members dismissed.
Meanwhile, United’s on-field struggles continue, with the team sitting in 15th place in the Premier League. Their latest setback came on Saturday, when they had to claw back from two goals down against Everton to salvage a draw.
