Manchester United midfielder
Mason Mount has been linked with Inter and now a major update has been made on a possible move.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano says a transfer won't happen and he has revealed why not.
Since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure,
United have spent heavily in the transfer market, but many signings have failed to live up to expectations.
Manager Rúben Amorim is now dealing with the consequences, having been restricted to just one first-team signing—Patrick Dorgu—in the January window, despite the squad’s urgent need for reinforcements.
Mount, who joined United from Chelsea for £55m (potentially rising to £60m), has struggled to make an impact due to persistent injuries.
Nearly two seasons into his Old Trafford career, the 26-year-old has only made 33 appearances, with just 13 starts.
With United planning to offload players this summer to fund a squad rebuild, Mount’s future has been under scrutiny. Italian reports recently suggested that Inter Milan had identified him as a target.
However, speaking on YouTube, Romano dismissed the speculation, explaining that Inter’s strategy does not align with signing a player like Mount.
“In recent days, we had reports about Inter being interested in
Mason Mount—coming from both Italian and English media,” Romano said.
“What I can tell you is Inter are going in a completely different direction. They want to invest in young players and not in players with high wages like Mount. It’s not about his quality, just the club’s strategy.”
United’s Summer Overhaul: Who Could Leave?
With a move to Inter off the table, United will assess Mount’s situation once he returns from injury. Romano confirmed that no negotiations are currently taking place regarding his sale.
“Man Utd are waiting for Mount to return before making any decisions. At the moment, there is nothing concrete in terms of negotiations with any club.”
United’s summer transfer strategy heavily depends on player sales, with several high-profile names potentially on the way out.
- Homegrown stars for sale: While Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo remain crucial to the squad, United are open to selling them at the right price due to homegrown players generating ‘pure profit’ on the books.
- Jadon Sancho: Expected to join Chelsea for around £25m.
- Marcus Rashford: Aston Villa can secure him permanently if they activate his £40m option to buy.
- Out-of-contract players: Jonny Evans, Victor Lindelöf, and Christian Eriksen will not be offered new deals.
- High earners on the chopping block: Casemiro and Antony are also available for transfer. Antony, currently on loan at Real Betis, has impressed and could secure a permanent move, while Casemiro is proving more difficult to offload.
The Brazilian midfielder, United’s highest earner at £350,000 per week, has made it clear he intends to see out his contract, which runs until 2026, and is unwilling to take a pay cut. This could complicate United’s efforts to free up wages and reshape the squad.
With a critical summer ahead, United must navigate a tricky balancing act—offloading underperforming stars while securing the reinforcements Amorim desperately needs.
