Manchester United are hoping to secure the signing of highly-rated teenager
Geovany Quenda with talks in progress
And the Red Devils are also intensifying their pursuit of Sporting Lisbon midfielder Morten Hjulmand, as part of a potential £82.9m double swoop.
Since Ruben Amorim’s arrival in November,
United’s struggles have only deepened, with the club currently sitting 15th in the Premier League—two places worse than when he took over from Erik ten Hag.
With just nine wins in 22 games, Amorim’s side holds a disappointing 40.91% win rate, highlighting the significant rebuilding task ahead.
Quenda Deal Moving Forward Despite Negotiation Standoff
One of United’s biggest issues has been the squad’s difficulty adapting to Amorim’s preferred 3-4-2-1 formation, a system that has been criticized by both players and pundits.
To address this, United have been targeting signings that fit the style, having already secured left wing-back Patrick Dorgu in January. Now, talks are advancing for Sporting Lisbon’s Quenda, a talented 17-year-old who can play as a right-winger or right wing-back.
Talks are advancing, but not necessarily advanced, because Manchester United are sticking to their number. At the moment, as you would expect, Sporting are doing the same.
There has been a little bit of an impasse, but Jorge Mendes is directly involved in negotiations, and because the player wants to join United, they remain hopeful a deal can be done.
Sporting are reportedly holding out for at least €60m (£49.8m), while United are aiming for a deal closer to €40m (£33.2m). A compromise around €50m (£41.5m) could be reached, making Quenda’s move increasingly likely.
Hjulmand Also on United’s Radar
In addition to Quenda, reports in Portugal suggest that United have stepped up their pursuit of Sporting midfielder Morten Hjulmand. The Danish international, who has flourished under Amorim, is seen as an ideal fit for the 3-4-2-1 system, particularly in the midfield anchor role.
Hjulmand has an €80m (£66.4m) release clause, but Sporting are reportedly open to negotiations and could accept a fee between €45m and €50m (£37.3m-£41.5m). The 25-year-old has been linked with several top clubs, including Barcelona, PSG, Tottenham, and Inter Milan.
Rasmus Hojlund Future in Doubt as United Target New Striker
Meanwhile, patience appears to be wearing thin with Rasmus Hojlund, who has endured a 16-game goal drought. Signed for £64m from Atalanta in 2023, the Danish striker has managed just 23 goals in 76 appearances for United. Reports now claim the club is open to selling him this summer, wary of suffering another financial setback.
With Hojlund’s future uncertain, United are reportedly closing in on a deal for Napoli’s Victor Osimhen, with sources suggesting the transfer is now “95% done.”
United Eye Free Transfers to Bolster Squad
Beyond big-money moves, United are also exploring the free-agent market, with reports suggesting they are targeting two Ligue 1 stars in a bargain double deal.
With a crucial summer ahead, Amorim is pushing for major reinforcements as he looks to reshape his struggling squad and finally bring stability back to Old Trafford.
