Clinton Morrison believes Manchester United made a mistake by bringing in Ruben Amorim mid-season instead of waiting until the summer.
Following a string of poor results, Erik ten Hag was dismissed in October, with Sporting’s highly-rated Amorim taking charge just a few months into the current Premier League campaign.
However, expectations of an immediate turnaround have not materialized. With just four wins in his first 15 league matches, United sit in a disappointing 15th place, dangerously close to the relegation zone.
Morrison, who played nearly 100 Premier League matches for Birmingham City and Crystal Palace, argues that Amorim should have been appointed before the season began so he could build a squad suited to his style, rather than inheriting a group ill-equipped for his tactical approach.
"If they wanted Ruben Amorim, they should have brought him in the summer," Morrison told Freebets.com. "Instead, they let Erik ten Hag stay, allowed him to bring in players, and then sacked him, leaving Amorim to work with a squad that doesn’t fit his system."

Squad Limitations Hindering Amorim’s Approach

Morrison pointed out that several key positions—particularly wing-back, central midfield, and striker—are significantly weaker at United compared to what Amorim had at Sporting Lisbon.
"United fans are going to have to suffer," he continued. "It’s going to take two or three transfer windows for Amorim to get the right players and implement his philosophy. Right now, the squad doesn’t have wing-backs who can play the way his Sporting team did. They don’t have two midfielders who can cover ground, and they certainly don’t have a striker like Viktor Gyökeres."

Speculation Over Amorim’s Future

Adding to the pressure, broadcaster Richard Keys has claimed that Amorim may already be considering an exit from Old Trafford, despite only being in charge for three months.
"They’ve got a manager who clearly doesn’t want to be there," Keys wrote in his blog. "It’s never been this bad. I want to see United back at the top, but right now, they’re light years away from competing with the best."
With United struggling and speculation swirling about Amorim’s future, the coming months will be crucial for both the manager and the club’s long-term direction.
