Michael Carrick pointed to "huge" moments from Leny Yoro which set up the chance for Benjamin Sesko to grab an equaliser at West Ham.
Yoro has not been a starter in recent weeks with the return of Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez at the centre of defence but he showed his quality coming off the bench against West Ham.
United had to throw caution to the wind and push for an equaliser which left them exposed at the back.
Joshua Zirkzee was brought on and Yoro went into defence where he made two crucial tackles which manager Michael Carrick pointed to after the match.
Speaking in a press conference he said he had "mixed feelings" about the result but that the disappointment from the players at a draw is a "good sign".
He said: "The boys are a bit frustrated and down which is a really good sign for me - and then finishing with a late goal when we had to find one which is a good moment and another positive for us to do that."
On pushing for the equaliser and leaving themselves open at the back, Carrick said it was a gamble worth taking.
He said: "It's always worth it to try and get something out of the game I think. I have to say credit to Leny, his two bits of defending one vs one, defending the counterattack which we knew he was going to have to do at times with throwing the bodies forward.
"Those two moment when he has blocked are huge moments and he deserves a lot of credit for that to give us the chance to get the goal to get something out of the game."
United were in the sixth minute of stoppage time when Sesko came up with another last ditch goal to continue Carrick's unbeaten run - although the sequence of four wins has ended.
There was disappointment as a win would have taken United up to a third and onto the shoulder of Manchester City but still progress can be seen in the way they dug out a draw.
