Gary Neville has revealed Manchester United's strategy over a new manager saying they won't be "bounced" into making a decision.
Michael Carrick has made an amazing start as interim boss at Old Trafford which has led to the repeated question of whether he should be given the role full time.
Clearly the target is Champions League football this season and if he achieves that then the clamour to appoint Carrick will grow even louder.
At the same time many pundits including Neville have previously said that United need a more experienced manager long term.
And now Neville says he has spoken to the club to try and get clarity on what they are planning.
"I spoke to the club," he said. "What's position of the club? How's it going to deal with it, it's a very difficult situation now, as there's a massive movement now considering what has happened, towards giving Michael Carrick the job and that he should be considered.
"That is going to build the more that he wins and gets closer to Champions League football.
"I asked the club what is the official position and what you are saying publicly and I thought their response was really good: 'We've begun our process now, starting to look for another manager'.
"I thought that is good to hear as you need to plan ahead, and so they have started the process now looking for another manager, that's good to hear because you need to plan for everything.
"So they have started the process of looking at and speaking to other managers, looking at the data, doing the analysis of who should be the next manager of the football club.
"What they have said is that they are not going to be bounced into, irrespective of wins, losses or draws in the next couple of months, making an appointment. They are going to wait until towards the end of the season - and if Michael makes himself available for the job.
Next up for United is an away game on Tuesday against West Ham where Carrick can extend his winning run at the helm to five games.
