Manchester United are closing in on the signing of Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers in a deal worth £62.5 million, making the Brazilian forward the first signing of Rúben Amorim’s reign at Old Trafford.
The move, described as being in the “final stages” by sources close to the club, will see United trigger Cunha’s release clause with structured payments to remain compliant with Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations.
The 25-year-old is expected to sign a long-term contract, with personal terms already agreed.
It can be seen as a statement start to United’s summer. Amorim clearly sees Cunha as central to his vision — a versatile, dynamic attacker who fits the profile for a pressing, high-intensity system.
Cunha has enjoyed a breakout season at Wolves, scoring 14 Premier League goals and assisting a further six. His movement, flair, and adaptability — capable of playing across the front line — make him a natural fit in Amorim’s preferred 3-4-3 formation.
What’s particularly notable is Cunha’s enthusiasm for the move despite United’s current struggles.
The club finished 15th in the Premier League and failed to qualify for any European competition, yet Cunha reportedly "loves the idea of playing for Manchester United", according to sources at Sky Sports.
“He’s been watching United since he was a kid,” one source said. “He sees this as a challenge — not a step down.”
The deal also highlights the influence of INEOS’ transfer strategy, which focuses on securing players entering their prime who are technically gifted, physically sharp, and open to long-term development under Amorim.
This signing is expected to be the first of several in a major summer rebuild, with United also pursuing players like Bryan Mbeumo and Jean-Philippe Mateta. Outgoings are also expected, including potential exits for Jadon Sancho, Antony, and Marcus Rashford.
If all goes to plan, Cunha will be unveiled in early June, marking a new era at Old Trafford — one built on youth, aggression, and total football.
