Alejandro Garnacho’s future at
Manchester United has been plunged into uncertainty after reports revealed that Rúben Amorim has told the 20-year-old winger he is free to leave this summer.
Despite being one of the few bright sparks in a dismal season — with 58 appearances, 9 goals, and 6 assists — Garnacho now appears to be surplus to requirements as
Amorim plans a ruthless rebuild of the first team.
Amorim has informed several players that they will not be part of his plans for 2025–26, and Garnacho’s name is among the most surprising.
The manager is reportedly looking for more discipline, tactical flexibility, and players better suited to his pressing system — traits he believes Garnacho may not fully offer at this stage of his development.
“You can’t keep everyone if you want to change everything,” one source close to the club told
The Sun. “Amorim has made it clear: reputation won’t protect anyone.”
The Argentine international has attracted interest from Atlético Madrid, Napoli, and Chelsea, all of whom are monitoring the situation closely. United are expected to demand a fee of around £60–70 million should they sanction his exit.
Garnacho’s camp, however, is understood to be keen to stay and fight for his place.
He remains under contract until 2028, and sources say he is “confused and disappointed” by the manager’s stance — especially after playing a leading role in United’s Europa League run and ending the season as one of their most productive attackers.
Tensions reportedly escalated after Garnacho was substituted in the Europa League final defeat to Tottenham, and later ‘liked’ a social media post criticizing Amorim’s tactics — before quickly unliking it.
“It’s a tough one,” said former United winger Lee Sharpe. “Garnacho has that spark, but if the manager doesn’t trust him, it might be better for both sides to move on.”
Whether Garnacho stays or goes will likely depend on how talks progress during the offseason — but his situation will be one of the most-watched stories of United’s summer.
