Manchester United winger
Alejandro Garnacho has been told he is free to leave the club this summer, as manager
Rúben Amorim begins a major squad reshuffle following United’s dismal 2024/25 campaign.
According to a report from
talkSPORT, Amorim has informed Garnacho directly that he is not part of his long-term plans, despite the 20-year-old making 58 appearances this season — the second-most of any player in the squad.
Garnacho’s exclusion from the final stages of the Europa League final defeat to Tottenham, coupled with his controversial 'like' of a social media post criticising Amorim, has added fuel to growing tensions between the pair.
“There’s no denying Garnacho’s talent, but Amorim wants a different attitude and tactical profile. It’s a cultural reset,” one club insider told talkSPORT.
The Argentine winger has emerged as a fan favourite due to his fearless style, pace, and directness, and his potential exit is likely to spark widespread interest across Europe.
Chelsea, Napoli, and Atlético Madrid are all reported to be monitoring the situation closely, with an asking price in the region of £60–70 million likely.
Garnacho signed a long-term contract extension last year and was widely tipped to be part of United’s next generation, alongside Kobbie Mainoo and Rasmus Højlund.
However, Amorim’s clear-out — designed to make room for his own signings — appears to have no exceptions.
“You can’t keep everyone if you want to change everything,” said talkSPORT pundit and ex-United midfielder Paul Ince. “But letting Garnacho go would be a massive risk.”
Despite the exit signals, sources say Garnacho wants to stay and fight for his place, but tensions with the manager may now make that untenable.
This situation is emblematic of a ruthless shift at Old Trafford, with Amorim backed by INEOS to strip back the current squad and rebuild with discipline, structure, and accountability.
Unless there’s a dramatic reversal in tone over the next few weeks, Garnacho’s time at United could end just as he was becoming one of their most exciting players.
