Manchester United are closing in on their first major signing of the summer, with reports confirming that the club is ready to trigger the £62.5 million release clause for Wolves forward
Matheus Cunha.
According to
The Sun, United have identified Cunha as a top priority for
Rúben Amorim’s new-look attack, and negotiations are in the final stages.
The 25-year-old Brazilian is expected to sign a long-term deal once personal terms are finalized.
Cunha has had an outstanding season for Wolverhampton Wanderers, registering 17 goals and 6 assists in 34 matches across all competitions.
His versatility — capable of playing across the front line — has made him one of the most in-demand forwards in the Premier League.
“He’s explosive, intelligent, and works both ways. A player built for big moments,” said a source close to the club.
Amorim reportedly views Cunha as a cornerstone of his rebuild, appreciating his ability to operate as a central striker, false nine, or wide forward — ideal for the 3-4-3 system United are expected to use next season.
Despite United’s lack of Champions League football next year — unless they win the Europa League final against Tottenham on Wednesday — Cunha is said to be enthusiastic about the move. His commitment to the project is seen as a key factor behind United’s swift progress in negotiations.
“Cunha has made it clear he wants to join United — it’s just a matter of time,” wrote Fabrizio Romano earlier this week.
Wolves, for their part, are resigned to losing their star man but will be compensated in full, thanks to the release clause, which United have agreed to meet outright.
Cunha is expected to earn in the region of £200,000 per week at Old Trafford — a significant upgrade from his current deal at Molineux.
With Amorim looking to reshape United’s attack, this signing could be the first of several big-name arrivals this summer. The club is also targeting wide players like Bryan Mbeumo, and a new goalkeeper remains on the agenda.
