Aleksandar Mitrović has emerged as a surprise contender to lead
Manchester United’s attack as they look to bring the former Fulham striker back to the Premier League from Al Hilal.
United have long been linked with Sporting’s Viktor Gyökeres, who scored an astonishing 43 goals in all competitions last season.
While manager
Rúben Amorim knows Gyökeres well from their time at Sporting, the deal has hit multiple roadblocks.
Sporting rejected a €70 million offer from Arsenal, indicating that his valuation could exceed €85–90 million, a fee that may be out of reach for United given PSR (Profit & Sustainability Rule) limitations and the lack of European revenue.
In contrast, Mitrović represents a more affordable and immediate solution. The Serbian international has been in red-hot form since joining Al Hilal, scoring 68 goals in 79 appearances, and is reportedly available for around £35–40 million.
According to
The Sun, United have made discreet enquiries, aware that Mitrović would bring proven Premier League experience, aerial dominance, and a strong physical presence — traits United have sorely lacked since Edinson Cavani’s departure.
“Mitrović is the kind of striker you hate to play against but love to have in your team,” said former Fulham manager Scott Parker. “He gives you a focal point, goals, and fight.”
With Rasmus Højlund’s future uncertain, and Matheus Cunha signed more as a hybrid forward, United still need a traditional No. 9. While Gyökeres fits the long-term profile, Mitrović may offer the short-term power and experience United need to stabilize the attack.
Additionally, Al Hilal may be open to negotiating after spending big last summer, and Mitrović himself is reportedly open to returning to England for one last major European challenge.
For a club aiming to rebuild quickly under Amorim, Mitrović could represent the smart, efficient move — a proven finisher without the financial complexity.
