Gary Neville has given his backing to the club’s transfer strategy this summer, highlighting the moves for Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo as exactly the kind of signings United need under new manager Ruben Amorim.
Speaking at the launch of his Business of Football Degree at UA92, Neville praised United’s decision to bring in Cunha from Wolves and their pursuit of Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo.
According to Neville, both players represent a positive shift in recruitment, focusing on proven Premier League performers who can immediately raise the team’s level.
“Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo are the right type of players for Manchester United at this stage,” Neville explained.
“They both have Premier League experience, they’re at a good age, and they’ve shown they can deliver goals and assists for their teams. That’s exactly what United have been missing—players who are ready to step up, not just potential for the future.”
Neville emphasized that United’s recent struggles have stemmed in part from inconsistent recruitment and a lack of established, reliable performers in key positions.
He believes that targeting players who have already proven themselves in the Premier League is a smart move and fits with Ruben Amorim’s desire to build a squad capable of competing at the highest level right away.
“United have made mistakes in the past by signing big names who haven’t adapted, or by gambling on potential that hasn’t materialized,” Neville said. “Cunha and Mbeumo are different—they know the league, they know what it takes, and they can hit the ground running.”
With United looking to bounce back from a disappointing season, Neville’s comments will be music to the ears of supporters hoping for a more stable and competitive team in 2025/26. The arrivals of Cunha and, potentially, Mbeumo signal a new approach at Old Trafford—one that prioritizes proven quality and immediate impact.
