Manchester United are prepared to push for a new striker before the January transfer window closes if Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, or Kobbie Mainoo leave the club, according to reports.
While the Red Devils are currently focused on securing a left-wing-back for Ruben Amorim’s squad before the February 3 deadline, they also have plans to strengthen their attack.
Sunday’s 3-1 defeat to Brighton at Old Trafford underscored United’s urgent need for reinforcements.
Antony’s impending loan move to Real Betis has created an opportunity for the club to accelerate their pursuit of Lecce left-wing-back Patrick Dorgu.
Meanwhile, Amorim and the club’s hierarchy have identified striker options to address the lack of goals from Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee.
According to Mail Sport, United scouts are monitoring four potential attacking targets: Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo, Wolves’ Matheus Cunha, Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap, and LOSC Lille’s Jonathan David.
However, any move for a striker hinges on creating space in the squad, especially given restrictions imposed by the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules.
The departure of Rashford, Garnacho, or Mainoo could significantly enhance United’s ability to bring in reinforcements.
As homegrown players, any transfer fees for the trio would be recorded as pure profit, aiding compliance with financial regulations.
Rashford is reportedly more likely to leave on loan, which would relieve the club of his £315,000-a-week salary.
Garnacho, on the other hand, is attracting serious interest from Chelsea and Napoli. United have set a valuation of at least £59 million for the 20-year-old, but negotiations are reportedly challenging due to the club’s high demands.
Garnacho has held direct talks with Napoli coach Antonio Conte, while his representatives attended Chelsea’s match against Wolves earlier this week.
Mainoo, at 19, is expected to stay at Old Trafford despite speculation about his future.
United are reportedly open to offers for all first-team players, but no concrete moves have been made for the young midfielder.
If Rashford, Garnacho, or Mainoo do not leave this month, United are likely to delay their striker pursuits until the summer.
Jonathan David, who has scored 17 goals in 30 appearances this season and boasts 31 international goals for Canada, remains a priority target.
The alternative options—Mbeumo, Cunha, and Delap—have all delivered impressive performances in the Premier League this season, offering potentially safer investments for the Red Devils.
