Paul Scholes has outlined eight
Manchester United players he believes should be culled by Ruben Amorim as the head coach embarks on a major rebuild at Old Trafford.
At the same time, the legendary midfielder has named three players he thinks should remain.
United are actively working to improve
Amorim’s struggling squad, starting with multiple departures before the January transfer window closes.
Antony is reportedly on the verge of joining Real Betis on loan until the end of the season, while Marcus Rashford and Tyrell Malacia are also expected to leave on temporary deals by the February 3 deadline.
Alejandro Garnacho, however, could exit permanently, with Napoli pushing to secure his signature.
Reports suggest United are holding out for £59 million, and Chelsea has emerged as a serious contender alongside the Serie A club for the 20-year-old winger.
Player sales are set to unlock reinforcements, with United in advanced talks with Lecce over highly-rated left-wing-back Patrick Dorgu.
According to The Athletic, the club is working on securing an additional signing alongside Dorgu before the winter window closes.
Amorim’s reshaping of the squad is expected to intensify in the summer, with more departures likely as part of his long-term plans.
While participating in a "Keep or Sell?" segment for TNT Sports, Scholes called for the sale of eight first-team players to generate funds for new signings.
Among them, he suggested center-back pairing Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martinez should be moved on, as well as injury-prone left-back Luke Shaw.
Scholes also expressed disappointment over Mason Mount’s lack of impact since his £55 million transfer from Chelsea in 2023, citing injuries as a major factor and stating he would not oppose his departure.
He was equally critical of Casemiro, who has fallen out of favour under Amorim and will turn 33 next month, suggesting the Brazilian midfielder should also be sold.
The former United star did not hold back on Antony and Rashford, asserting that both should leave permanently rather than being loaned out.
Finally, Scholes targeted £36.5 million summer signing Joshua Zirkzee, who has struggled to impress with just four goals in 31 appearances this season.
Scholes’ recommendations reflect the significant challenges facing Amorim as he looks to overhaul the squad and rebuild a team capable of challenging for top honours.
Scholes doesn't want Amorim to axe his whole squad, though, and has defended under-fire goalkeeper
Andre Onana.
That said, his comments came days before the Cameroon international's latest blunder in Sunday's 3-1 defeat against Brighton and Hove Albion.
Scholes also wants Garnacho to remain at Old Trafford but suggested he was open to boosting the budget with his sale.
However, the United great was adamant in insisting that Kobbie Mainoo should be off the table, branding the 19-year-old midfielder as one of the club's most exciting players.
