Manchester United defender Patrick Dorgu has leapt to the defence of manager Rúben Amorim, insisting the Portuguese coach’s tactical approach is the right one despite a disappointing start to the season.
Amorim has come under scrutiny following United’s winless opening to the Premier League campaign, including a 1-1 draw against Fulham at Craven Cottage.
Critics, including former captain Wayne Rooney, have questioned both results and the team’s defensive organisation. However, Dorgu, a summer signing from Lecce, believes Amorim’s methods will pay off if given time.
Speaking after the Fulham match, Dorgu highlighted the flexibility of Amorim’s preferred 3-4-3 formation, which can morph into a back four when required.
“The manager’s system is very clear,” Dorgu said. “It gives us structure but also the freedom to adapt depending on the opponent.
"We can build with three at the back, but when the game changes, we can switch quickly to four. That flexibility is a strength, not a weakness.”
The Danish full-back also praised Amorim’s attention to detail on the training ground. “He’s very precise in what he asks from us,” Dorgu added.
“Every player knows their role. We are still learning as a team, but the ideas are strong. For me, this project is exciting.”
Dorgu’s comments come at a time when Amorim faces increasing pressure, with United yet to register a victory this season and fans voicing frustration at missed chances and defensive frailties.
Nevertheless, the defender believes patience is key. “It’s early in the season,” he said. “With the new players coming in and adapting, it takes time. But I have full belief in the manager and the direction we’re going.”
Supporters have praised Dorgu’s performances since his arrival, and his public show of faith in Amorim may help ease tension in the dressing room. While doubts persist outside the club, United’s players appear determined to back their coach.
As the team prepares for upcoming fixtures, the spotlight remains on whether Amorim’s system can start delivering wins. For Dorgu, though, the belief is unwavering: “We will improve, and we will show what this team is capable of.”
