Rasmus Højlund is on the verge of joining Napoli with negotiations being finalised on a move from Manchester United.
The proposed agreement is structured as a loan with an option – and potentially an obligation – to buy, worth a total of around €45 million (£39–40m).
If completed, it would represent a swift exit for a player who only joined United two summers ago for a fee in excess of £64 million.
The deal is expected to include a €5 million loan fee followed by a €40 million purchase clause.
Sources indicate this could become mandatory if certain conditions are met, such as a set number of appearances, goal contributions, or Napoli’s qualification for the Champions League.
From the Italian side, urgency has been added by the recent injury to Romelu Lukaku, leaving the Serie A champions short of centre-forward options, reported The Sun.
For United, the move is both financially painful and strategically necessary. Højlund struggled for consistency during his time at Old Trafford, often isolated in attack and criticised for his decision-making in the final third.
With the summer arrival of Benjamin Sesko, competition for the striker’s role has intensified, leaving Højlund surplus to requirements in manager Ruben Amorim’s system.
He has already been left out of the squad for United’s first two Premier League fixtures of the season.
Interestingly, reports suggest that Scott McTominay, now a Napoli player himself, played a behind-the-scenes role in persuading Højlund to make the switch.
The midfielder has reportedly spoken highly of the club, its environment, and the passionate fanbase, which helped convince the striker that Naples would be the right place to relaunch his career.
For United supporters, the deal is bittersweet. Many had high hopes when the then-20-year-old joined from Atalanta, billed as one of Europe’s most promising young forwards.
However, the pace and pressure of the Premier League, coupled with managerial instability, meant he never quite established himself.
If the paperwork is finalised this week, Højlund could be unveiled as a Napoli player before the close of the transfer window, giving him a vital opportunity to rebuild his reputation in Serie A.
