Manchester United make the trip to Cleethorpes on Wednesday evening to face Grimsby Town in a fixture that offers Ruben Amorim to rotate the squad and try different strategies.
With less than three days separating this clash and Burnley’s visit to Old Trafford in the Premier League, players are expected to be rested.
The fitness of Noussair Mazraoui remains a concern. The Moroccan international has been out of action since the final day of last season, when he limped off during the 2-0 win against Aston Villa.
Despite travelling with squads to Sweden and the United States over the summer, he did not feature in any of the pre-season games and is still edging his way back to full fitness.
Amorim offered a cautious update ahead of the game: “Maybe he is going to return next week, we will see. But he’s near, we are just finishing some drills with him to be sure that he’s not going to have another problem.”
Lisandro Martínez is also unavailable as he continues to recover from a knee injury suffered in February, leaving United somewhat stretched at the back, reported ManUtd.com.
That could open the door for younger defenders to gain valuable minutes, with Amorim keen to manage workloads.
Further forward, Benjamin Šeško is pushing for his first start after cameos against Arsenal and Fulham, while Joshua Zirkzee and Kobbie Mainoo are also eager to be involved for the first time this season.
Andre Onana was left out again at Craven Cottage and it will be interesting to see if Amorim gives him a start.
For Grimsby, the game represents a special occasion. The Mariners, operating in League Two, will relish the opportunity to test themselves against top-flight opposition in front of a packed home crowd.
A disciplined shape and set-piece threat will be central to their hopes of causing an upset.
While United are heavy favourites, the combination of rotation and away conditions means this will require professionalism. Expect Amorim to use the match as both a stepping stone for returning players and a chance to showcase squad depth ahead of a busy domestic run.
